Grr Con 2026 Thoughts + Review

Sat, 26 Sep 2026 10:24:06 -0400

Beer Counter: 9!

Grrcon this year was pretty interesting this year. Attending confrences typically help you do one of two things. Get up to speed with technologies that you use, and they can also help indicate to you where the technology / market is moving.

In years past, Grrcon was more interesting to see the way you can get up to speed with the tools that you are using. I remember, for example in 2021 when Behavioral Based Detection + AI was making its first waves into the EDR, MDR sceene. I remember signing up at a vendor booth (sentinel one) and doing a challenge, where we had to diagnose the type of malware etc. quicker than the AI, everyone who did it lost within seconds.

//movies/afro-surrealism-and-neocolonialism

Sat, 07 Feb 2026 11:34:09 -0500

By far, some of my favorite films are those that analyze the Black experience in the United States. These films often demand to be viewed through the lens of neocolonialism whether the viewer realizes it or not. By exposing the parallels between historical colonial rule and modern American systems. Many of these works also utilize Afro-surrealism, allowing filmmakers to bridge the gap between the mundane and the absurd. This creates a reality that displays the raw truths of living within these structures. I believe these movies are best watched through a Marxist framework or an anti-neocolonial lens; these perspectives enable you to better describe, analyze, and truly feel the weight of the story as it unfolds.

A Letter too WMU

Mon, 26 Jan 2026 11:51:09 -0500

> I wrote this in response to a Job Fair that WMU was going to be hosting on Febuary 3rd 2026, that Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) was going to be present at. In this email, I attempted to tailor it around how CBP's presence does not meet the non discrimination policy as well as how it would be an image nightmare. Luckily though, the college rescinded the invintation to CBP. Which is a wonderful win in my book.

why privacy matters.

Thu, 06 Nov 2025 19:00:18 -0500

“If you do nothing wrong, why should you be worried about your privacy?” This is one of the most common arguments used to dismiss concerns about surveillance and data collection. In his article Why Privacy Matters Even If You Have ‘Nothing to Hide’, Daniel J. Solove critiques this perspective, calling it “the most common retort against privacy advocates” (Solove, 2011).

Solove challenges the simplicity of this argument through both humor and analysis. He highlights its flaws with provocative phrases such as “show me yours and I’ll show you mine,” “so do you have curtains?”, and “if you don’t have anything to hide, then you don’t have a life” (Solove, 2011). These rebuttals underscore the absurdity of equating privacy with wrongdoing.

a fun story about picking locks

Tue, 23 Sep 2025 19:27:45 -0400

Ive competed in two lock picking competitions. My favorite lock picking story to share is actually one of these competitions. It was a small set of folks that competed. It was a gauntlet style competition. The first two competitions were a small cheap lock from dollar tree or something, and a laminated lock with serrated pins. The final competition is where it gets fun.

To win the competition, we were each given a water gun with a trigger lock. The game starts, and you have to put on kaleidoscope glasses, and are tasked with being the first person to pick the trigger lock, and to fill the water gun up and accurately shoot the person sitting in front of you. The buzzer goes off and the timer starts and… we wait, well after like 3 minutes, we were not able to get the lock off neither me or the other guy. I forfeit the competition on the condition that they show me that they can get the lock off the gun. I at the time couldn’t feel the 4th pin, and could not get it to drop. We all agreed on the conditions and they stick the key into my gun, and bam. it didn’t work. They ended up banging the trigger lock off with a hammer and replacing it. We then do the competition again, andddd i lost. second place. The other guy, who previously couldn’t get his lock off the gun all of a sudden could. So i got second place. Honestly I love that i get to tell this story, because one i made second place in a gun lock picking contents, and two I won probably the most expensive lock picking set I will ever own.

Tue, 02 Sep 2025 18:13:43 -0400

In general i am a huge fan of horror. I actually was introduced to horror manga by a good friend of mine. Junji Ito, I would say is the person who really kicked off my interest into horror. Before my exposure to Junji Ito, I really enjoyed terrible (i mean absolutely terrible) horror movies like Detention (2011) and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023). Part of what was so interesting to me about Junji Ito was the amount of detail he added to his art. Every manga was worth every penny I would spend on it. Junji Itos works sparked my interest in general Japanese horror. It broadened my sense of “what horror is”. I proceed to learn more about japanese history and about the reason that japan has such a nihilistic view in much of their media. Later I expanded into other cultures view of horror including Korean, and Taiwanese.

oso is my dog. he is my second dog, but he is my favorite dog ever. when i got him, his name was little bear. but hes a big dog. so theres no way i can call him little bear. in spanish, osito means little bear, and i thought about calling him that, but decided to not again because he is a big dog (80lbs of loving dog). i also thought about calling him joint. he has an oral fixation, and quite literally always has to have something in his mouth, or he goes crazy. i eventually decided to name him oso, removing the ito suffix. he was born some time in 2020 (people dont treat dog birthdays the same as they do human birthdays unfortunately).

New Job!

The summer semesters are kind of a drain for me Ive been doing a Data Analysis class and because its a summer course, it just becomes a huge drain having to get out of work, and watch an hour long video every day. Besides my class, I ended up getting a new job. Im still at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, but instead of being a Support Analyst, I am now a Systems Analyst / Developer. I remember a long time, I was asked if I would ever like being in a position like this, and I think at the time I turned the college down, mostly because I had virtually zero experience with Banner, the colleges SIS. Had the college used any other SIS, I probably would have been one million times more comfortable saying maybe.

who am i

Mon, 01 Sep 2025 19:03:22 -0400

hello my name is joshua! I am a systems analyst / developer. In my free time, i mostly write code in rust (lately though i have been doing more stuff in python). For work, I deal with a number of programming languages, and build / deliver solutions for end users across the company.

> ~~I am in search of an open-source project that I can contribute to. so if you have something you think i would be interested in please let me know!~~ >
> I actually have begun contributing to overseerr, so that will be my hobby for now when im not working or in school. Though im open to other projects, please reach out to me if you have something you think i might like. Thanks friends! :)

I run this website, mostly so i can have a place where i actually own the things that i post, not facebook, or xtwitter. I think having a website is fun, but also a strong part of expressing your right to technology. I think everyone should have a website, even if you don’t use it like me. Social media restricts the way that you can interact with people by a post, or a video, or a picture. Websites let you do whatever you want, how ever you want. Websites, are intended to be fun, and unique expressions reflecting your values, and interests.

low life, high tech pizza. powered by aws

Sat, 07 Dec 2024 11:23:21 -0500

To start, the exam isn’t that bad!!

Overall, the exam asks a lot of questions centered around the best way to set up a system in AWS. These questions require a shift in how I think about solving problems. For years, I’ve been tasked with standing up or setting up systems according to specific requirements that aren’t flexible. In the Solutions Architect Associate exam, the questions are more like “What’s the AWS way to do this?”—even if it means fundamentally changing how the application works. The idea is to design solutions that eliminate inefficiencies. This is a huge change from how my job looks day-to-day right now.

internet addiction and cell phones

Mon, 26 Feb 2024 20:46:09 -0500

The below question came from a class discussion, and I really enjoyed it because it is something that I have recently been doing quite a bit of research on personally. While I did respond to the discussion, it was not in the length that I would have wanted. So I summarized the two paragraphs here and shared it with class. Otherwise, my personal response is as follows below.

Do you think using cell phones too much is bad for our physical or mental health? Why or why not?

H CON RES 14 - Email Your Representative

Thu, 19 Oct 2023 00:40:04 -0700

A quick overview on this bill is as follows:

Key Points on H.Con.Res.14

Restricting Healthcare access: Cuts to Medicaid ($880 billion) and indirect Medicare pressures could affect millions. Currently 80 million Americans receive medicaid and 2.8 million Michiganders. The hypothetical here is as the fed cuts funding to Medicaid, the state will have to pick up the bill, or not, leaving recipients with reduced or no coverage.
Increasing the Debt Ceiling: Adding $4.5 trillion to the debt. As a part who cry’s about fiscal responsibility, i beg for them to explain how this is fiscally responsible.

vacation to mexico

Thu, 07 Sep 2023 10:32:58 -0400

Im back!

Ive been gone for a little while now. I went on vacation to mexico for about 21 days to visit friends. I had a blast. Everything there is vastly different than here in the states. Where I live, if you need anything other than beer you need to drive about 5-20 minutes to get whatever you need. In Druango Durango Mexico, If I need to go to the store, its about a 5 minute walk to a Ley; The equivalent of a walmart or meijers. If im in the mood for some chips and a soda, theres a conveince store, or Oxxo within 2 to 5 minutes. Hungry for a burger, theres a place that sells hamburgesas down the street. Come on lets walk its only 10 minutes away! I will tell you though, I was a little dissapointed in the hamburgessa. I was expecting a american hamburger but instead found, carne asada, a salchica split in two, hamon, lettuce tomatoe, onion, pickles, mayo, mustrard, ketchup all on a bun. It was decent, but wasnt what I was looking for.
