/movies/afro surrealism and neocolonialism

By far, some of my favorite films are those that analyze the Black experience in the United States. These films often demand to be viewed through the lens of neocolonialism whether the viewer realizes it or not. By exposing the parallels between historical colonial rule and modern American systems. Many of these works also utilize Afro-surrealism, allowing filmmakers to bridge the gap between the mundane and the absurd. This creates a reality that displays the raw truths of living within these structures. I believe these movies are best watched through a Marxist framework or an anti-neocolonial lens; these perspectives enable you to better describe, analyze, and truly feel the weight of the story as it unfolds.

> I whole heartedly belive you should go into all of these movies completly blind, without knowing what they are about or knowing the premise of the plot, as that will ultimately spoil the experience. I will prvoide titles, and my comments on the movie, but honestly nothing more.

Queen and Slim

The use of silence in this film, forces you as the viewer to sit with your thoughts, as you view the characters experience horrific acts. As well as it forces you to again sit with your thoughts as the characters them selves process reality. This is a quite sad movie, so i can only watch this once a year, but when I do. I enjoy every minute of it, AND, every time I watch it the silence allows for me to have a different experience as my thought train and feelings about certain things in the movie may have changed due to personal experiences.

They Cloned Tyrone

A very good african american dystopian sci-fi movie and a critique on consumerisim and identity. Its whole heartedly worth every minute of the two hours this movie is. A text book example how colonialism, and neocolonialism is felt today in the Americas.

Nope

A sci-fi western with a twist, directed by Jordan Peele. I very good critique of the Industry of the Spectacle. Not all things are to be monetized, and the pursuit of such things can often lead to our own desctruction.

Get Out

A discussion on the fetization of african americans. Also, the sunken place here is a great usage of afro-surrealism, as its a good depiction of what i can feel like to be in a state where you can see the experiences you have clearly, but have no power to move within it.

Sorry to Bother You

Tackling the identity and assimilation problems one must conquer to succeede in corporate america today. It provides an analysis on code switching and workplace critiques.
